Activity Equipment for your Baby’s First Year

With all the options out there, it can be overwhelming trying to select activity equipment such as baby swings for your child’s first year. Plus, if this is your first child, you may wonder what your baby will play with most during his or her first year and which baby activity equipment options will give you the most bang for your buck.

Baby’s first year

Your baby’s vision, coordination, muscle tone and intellect all increase at an amazing rate during his or her first year of life, but for many children, it’s not fast enough. Just make sure to always supervise your baby while in the bouncer. Never put the bouncer on a table or on anything that your baby could bounce off of and keep it out of range of furniture and dangerous objects such as cords, hot surfaces and curtain pulls.

Baby Swings

Swings are one of many parents’ favorite ways to sooth a crying baby. You can usually begin using a swing when your baby is 6 to 8 weeks old, but you should check with your pediatrician first. Swings typically hold babies up to 15 to 25 lbs.

Look for a swing with safety straps and a comfortable seat. You’ll also need to choose between a wind-up model and a battery-operated model. The battery-operated models are nice because you don’t have to worry about periodically winding up the swing, but some parents like the slow winding down of the manual models.

Be sure to keep swings and all other action equipment on a level surface away from stairs.

Activity Centers

Exersaucers just may be the final frontier in baby action equipment. They swivel, rock, bounce, and turn a full 360 degrees, and they come fully loaded with toys to stimulate your baby's hand-eye coordination, focus, and perception. Plus, exersaucers are safer than walkers because they are stationary, but they provide plenty of entertainment for your child.

Exersaucers are suitable for any child who’s old enough to sit up and control head movement, and most exersaucers can adjust to accommodate a toddler’s height.

Doorway Jumpers

Jumpers enable babies to experience the exciting possibilities of standing up straight and using their legs to stand up control movement. Baby jumpers are designed for children 6 months and older who are comfortable supporting weight on their legs.

How do I get my cat to wear a collar?

When i first got my cat he was only 12 weeks so the collar was too big for him to wear, but now that he is nearly 1yr old i want to get him to wear one for safety reasons. I have tried putting one on him and he jumps around and scratches his neck like crazy!

your cat is just going to have to get used to it. have you tried one with and without a bell? Also make it's a safety collar that breaks off in case he were to get stuck on something, the collar will break free and will not choke him.

GO FOR THE EUREKA!!!

The Dyson "never looses suction" claim is 100 percent true, and this can be a wonderful selling point for the virgin Dyson buyer... However, the high price tag is very much one that you will find you have wasted.

While there are many Dyson satisfied customers, the fact remains that while their technology is brilliant, the production value is very low. The plastics used are cheap and breakable. If they don't crack or break off within the first few weeks, as mine did, just wait a few months until they begin to warp, and the tubes no longer fit in certain regions. It is a splendid design, if only they had put as much caring into their craftsmanship.

What I can promise you with the Eureka, is that while it is simple, it is tough. The vac is known for being a survivor, and yes, you may experience some loss of suction here or there, but it is nothing that a bent up coat hanger and ten minutes can't fix.

If you happen to have a multimillion dollar income, and throwing $600 at a Dyson is like throwing a dime on the ground, then go for it and replace it again next month when something breaks off. If, however, you happen to live much like say... a Yale graduate with a few hundred thousand dollars in college loans to pay off each month... please don't waste your time on the Dyson design.

I have always loved wooden toys and there are a number of reasons why. Firstly, they are made from natural materials giving them a beauty unsurpassed by any other kind of toy. Having been manufactured from a malleable material such as wood, toys are always beautifully made. In modern day such toys are mass produced but in yesteryear, these would have been made more primitively or crudely by skilled craftsmen.

Secondly, some toys are left in their natural wood state resplendent in their organic beauty of warm wooden tons. Not only are they wonderful to look at but they also have a grainy texture giving a natural feel not found in any other materials. Other toys are painted in bright shiny primary colours that cannot fail to have a great visual impact on a child.

Thirdly, I have a certain satisfaction about a wooden toy in knowing it will pretty much withstand the rough and tumble function it needs to ensure. The solid properties of wood give it an inherent robustness unmatched by the plastic alternative for durability and longevity.

Having outlined why I love wooden toys I have discovered there is an exciting range of fair trade toys made from sustainable wood in countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. Because these products are produced within the controlled framework of fair trade co-operatives, it means they have been produced ethically. By this, it means that no-one has been exploited where a fair wage and working conditions have been applied throughout the whole production process.

 The range of fair trade toys is broad with some being fundamental in helping a child to learn about spelling words, colours, shapes, counting, letters or numbers.

A good example is the wooden ark with sets of brightly painted animals, from zebras, elephants and tigers to alligators, lions and monkeys perfect for helping children to recognise and name objects they may not necessarily see unless they visited a zoo.

For boys, there are various play-scenes with castles, complete with wooden soldiers, horses, and drawbridges to help stimulate a child's imagination. There are also sturdy wooden trains and building blocks in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. For girls there is a wide choice of pretty scenes based on themes such as fairies, butterflies, ponies and mermaids.

Other good examples of wooden toys with a more educational objective are the jigsaws that have brightly coloured numbers or letters painted sequentially across them. The objective for this kind of toy is to encourage and help a child to learn about counting or the sequence of the alphabet. These kinds of jigsaws come in a variety of designs including elephants, dinosaurs, crocodiles and trains. They are normally brightly painted to make them eye catching and visually stimulating.

Although not really a toy, there is an interesting selection of fair trade money boxes  handmade from wood and then painted to depict animals such as zebras, cats and giraffes.  I have also seen a mouse made from a hollowed out coconut shell with wooden ears and a string tail.
