Pet Finder - the Easiest Way to Find a Lost Pet

During the terrible destruction of hurricane Katrina and other storms over the past year, thousands of animals were separated from their families during evacuation efforts. This was either because evacuations are set up primarily to save the lives of humans, not their pets. Secondly, even if families evacuated on their own and could have brought their pets, many might not have been able to find them during the chaos of natural disasters.

In response to this important need to reunite families with their pets, Petfinder.com and the Maddie Fund formed the Animal Emergency Response Network (AERN). According to the AERN website, 3,200 animals caught in the destruction of hurricanes Katrina and Rita were united with their families, or were relocated to new homes, thanks to the AERN database.

What is Petfinder.com?

Any organization that would do such wonderful work to save animals across the country deserves recognition. So what is Petfinder.com? Petfinder is a wonderful service that provides an online database of animals across the North American continent which need a home. It includes, and is supported by, over 10,000 animal shelters and adoptive organizations. Petfinder essentially serves as a central database for the country’s lonely and homeless pets, and a wonderful method for families who have loving homes for such pets to easily find a perfect pet that would fit into the family.

Surprisingly (because the website is so professionally done, and the operation is so well managed), Petfinder is a non-profit organization that consists of professionals and members of the public who volunteer their time to update and maintain this database. This is proof that there are some very good people out there.

How Does the Petfinder Database Work?

The Petfinder database provides searches through thousands of pet listings using various criteria including:

• Animal
• Breed
• Age
• Size
• Gender
• Location

And an advanced search section provides searches based on:

• Animal type and breed
• Age
• Pets with a certain name
• Only particular pets such as special needs, declawed, or only those recommended for children.

The results will return the name (if appropriate), the breed, gender, and even a photo. Clicking on the link will take you to the shelter or rescue organization which listed it.

A Pet Portrait Featuring Your Pet’s Name

If you are an organization considering listing a pet, one very unique way to provide an image of the pet that will really get noticed is to have a portrait done of the pet’s photo. Not only would this attract a great deal of attention, but you could also offer the portrait as a bonus to the lucky family who takes this animal back to a loving home. Pet portraits are sweeping the country as a very popular form of recognizing how pets mean to families.

The best pet portraits in the country are created by artist Nikky Hughes of Los Angeles. Nikky was classically trained at the Mission Renaissance art school, and she focuses on capturing not only the beauty, but the unique character of each animal. She will accept photos through the mail of pets, and then create stunning portraits from those pictures. Pet portraits are ideal because they can be done from a photo (as apposed to getting the pet to “pose” at a studio.)

There is also a search box to find Animal Welfare groups in your local area. There is an online library where you can learn more about the various breeds, a section where you can learn how you can personally volunteer locally to help pets, a training section with dog and cat training videos, lost and found pet classifieds, a blog and forum community, a shop where you can find animal-oriented gear, and even a “fun” section for kids where there are free Ecards and some fun games.

Petfinder isn’t only a website where you can go to find a pet, it’s a place that does a great service for communities across the continent, and it’s also a website you can go just to spend some time and take part in activities that are available for animal lovers from around the world.

Tips For A Good Start With Your New Cat

If you have decided to keep a cat as a pet, be prepared for long-term cat care. If you are settled on having cat as pet then you must get off to a good start and everything must be planned in order to avoid future mistakes. Cats are nice companions but you have to understand their needs, one of which is your cat has to eat but you can't feed your feline friend your leftovers. It is better to look for the best cat food that can give your pal energy boost as well as good health. To save some money for the best cat food, you might have to give up some luxuries to be able to afford them. If you are settled at the thought that you want the cat to be with you for long, then you may really be the rightful owner of one. You can never indulge in flip-flop ways of doing things, wanting something now and then rejecting the idea as this would be harmful for the cat and you too. My cat is loosing his fur on his belly, what should i do besides vet?

I rescued my cat from a shelter, and he's always had a bare belly. I took him to the vet and she perscribbed some medicine wich didn't work. She also said it could be allergies to something. we have experimented with many things but still have no idea what he is allergic to...any ideas?

Some cats are also allergic to elements in their food, such as red dye # (whatever...5?), and believe it or not, things like fish. Fish protein is very hard on their digestive systems...much like cow's milk is to us. Some of us handle it just fine....others...ychhh! Cats generally don't get fish in the wild, if you think about it. Cats? Water? no fish.

There are some very good foods available from the vet, and yeah...it seems expensive, but it works out, because they don't have to eat as much of it, and they get healthier - so the vet bills drop. I'd ask the vet about something like "I.D." which is designed for sensitive systems - there's also one called "X.D." (I think) which has more variety but is also less stressful to the digestive system.

There have been lots of books written about dogs like Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows, Black Beauty is every girls dream horse after his memoirs were so cleverly translated, and a recent string of mystery novels featuring sleuthing cats have earned felines a place in the literary annals. Considering that isn't it interesting that some of the animal characters most people seem to remember the best are pigs. When book lovers think of pigs they smile as they remember the sweet innocence of Wilbur as he strutted around the barnyard, or they shudder with delicious distaste as they think about how George Orwell's Napoleon ruled the farm after overthrowing the humans in Animal Farm.      

Recently pigs have been finding their way into more and more homes as family pets. Many pet owners are delighted by the pig's keen intelligence and dynamic personality. Or they walk into a neat tidy barn and spot and entire litter of new piglets sleeping in a little pig heap on a bed of straw. The next thing they know they have purchased a young pot bellied pig and are taking it home.      

The first mistake people often make is assuming that a pot bellied pig would make a good pet for their family is that they don't really understand that the cuteness fades...fast. One minute they are holding a cute little piglet, the next they are looking at a short legged growing piglet with a strangely shaped skull, drooping jowls, and stiff hair.      

The next mistake pet owners make when they purchase a potbellied pig is that they assume it will stay miniature sized. While it is true that the pot bellied pig is considerably smaller then its barnyard cousins pet owners need to understand that the pigs that are used for bacon and Easter hams are normally butchered at weight surpassing three hundred and fifty pounds. The full grown sows can weigh in at well over five hundred pounds.      

Once you have purchased a newborn potbellied pig you need to start thinking about its health care. Pot bellied pigs need to be spayed or neutered, they need to have their feet trimmed on a regular basis, they need to have their long tusks trimmed, and they need yearly vaccinations. Purchasing a pet health plan for your new pet might help make veterinary care more affordable. If you decide to purchase a health insurance plan for your pot bellied pig make sure it is one that it will still be valid at the end of your pets life, which could bet twenty years away. If you are unable to find a pet health insurance company who is selling coverage for potbellied pigs try to get a deal through an insurance company that insure farmers' valuable livestock.      

In addition to health insurance pot bellied pig owners should probably consider getting some type of liability insurance in case their pot bellied pig accidentally hurts someone. For the most part pot bellied pigs are low key and amiable but once in a while you can stumble across one that gets irritated with people. Just like their larger, barnyard cousins, pot bellied pigs a re very strong they literally toss a full grown man to the side with just a little nudge of their snout.

Please help, troublesome UNCLE?

Hi I am a 14 year old living with my parents and my uncle. My uncle sometimes dresses up like a pegasus (a horse with wings) and goes out for a weekend to meet people, I think they are known as fursonas or furrys and I don't really have a problem with him doing it. Sometimes he brings another man home with him usually a cheetah or a tiger (he loves cats) and they use the futon in my room to have sex on and I have a big problem with this as they are very loud when they are growling at each other and last time they knocked over my whole freakin Lego Batman playset now I'm missing my penguin lego figure and I can't find it anywhere. I love my uncle to death but how do I tell him his strange hobby is affecting me too??? Please help!

Do NOT use mothballs anywhere that a cat or kitten can GET TO them. Kittens are very nosy, and will try to play with the "foil wrapped" balls.

MOTH BALLS KILL..............not only moths, but kittens, cats, and other animals. They're VERY TOXIC........

DO NOT USE MOTH BALLS to deter your kitten.

Keep things off the top of counters that you know she'll want, but will be harmful to her. Chocolate is harmful, too, but will not kill immediately.
