Deshedding Tool

I'm an asthmatic and I'm allergic to my cat...?

Has anyone out there with the same problem found a solution? I don't want to give him up to a shelter.

Any advice is appreciated such as a good deshedding tool or air purifier. I've been to the emergency room twice because my fast acting inhaler wouldn't do the job and I'm positive it's because of my cat allergy. Thanks...

There's a number of things you can do. They found out over a decade ago that you can reduce the amount of dander in the home by taking distilled water and sponging down the walls and furniture from knee high on down, to get rid of clinging dander (it eliminates up to 75%), and use warm distilled water to wet down the cat to the skin--no soap, just wet the cat down and towel dry.

Also, keep the air filter in your bedroom and make the bedroom a 'cat free' zone.

I hear good things about the furminator, but haven't used one yet.

You can get fur off your furniture by wiping with a damp sponge. But it's the dander & fluid from the saliva that causes allergic reactions,not the fur itself.

Also check with your doctor to see if you can get one of the desensitizing shots for this.

I'd recommend going over to www.google.com and typing in 'controlling cat allergies', there are lots of suggestions over there that will work.

So I'm thinking about a furminator deshedding tool but would my pup actually benefit from it (PiC iNSiDE!)?

People recommended the deshedding tool, but as i was looking at the demos they have on their website.. I've noticed that those dogs have an large amount of hair... and as you can see.. she doesn't.. but she shed like crazy!!

So with that said...
Would this product be okay for my dog?

First, make sure she is getting a high quality diet, you would be amazed how much quality food helps with shedding the make sure the skin and coat are healthy with regular bathings. I love my furminator but most of my dogs have always had an undercoat which this product excels at taking out. I think this is the best deshedding tool out there. You can also try deshedding mitts and slicker brushes, those may work even better with a single coat short haired dog.

How To Keep Your Cat Safe In Warm Months

The hot summer months can pose a real threat to pets. Cats and dogs simply cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. As a responsible pet owner, you need to make sure that your pet is safe during these warm weather months. Here are some tips to help you and your pet.

Never leave an animal in a car: All pet owners should know the dangers of leaving any pet in a hot car, even if it is just for a few minutes. This especially applies to dog owners. Dogs love riding in the car and it is very tempting to let your dog ride to the grocery store with you. However, pet owners should never leave cats or dogs inside a car during hot weather. Even with the windows open, a car parked in the hot sun can reach sweltering temperatures. Pets left in hot cars can die within minutes or can suffer from severe dehydration. The best rule of thumb is the leave your pet at home in the cool air conditioner during the hot weather. You should also know that if you are a dog owner that allowing your dog a ride the bed of a truck could be very dangerous for a dog at any time of the year. One jolt can send your dog flying out of the bed of the truck, resulting in injury or worse. Even putting your dog unsupervised in the bed of a truck in a public place can be a recipe for disaster. Be extra careful with your pet during traveling. If you must travel with your dog or cat, secure your pet in the car and leave the air conditioning on at all times. Let your pets take frequent breaks on long trips and give them a chance to get a drink of water.

Be Careful Walking the Dog: There are many areas where the temperatures soar in the warm months. In places where the temperatures reach an all-time high, it is a good idea to walk your dog either in the morning or in the evening when temperatures are lower. During the summer, temperatures will be at the highest during midday. You should refrain from walking your dog during this time. Not only will you and your dog become hot and dehydrated, the hot concrete can burn your dog's sensitive paws. When you do walk during hot weather, take along water for your dog and stop frequently to let your dog drink. Your dog will thank you for this.

Practice Proper Pet Grooming: It is always a good idea to keep your pet properly groomed, but it is especially important during the summer months. If your dog has very long fur, it is like wearing a fur coat in 95-degree weather. It is not comfortable to your pet. Also, keep an eye out for pets that have much of their fur trimmed off, such as poodles. Longhaired dogs can quickly overheat in the high temperatures. Poodles and other breeds with short cuts can get sunburned. Sunscreen does not protect dogs. With long haired dogs, regular brushing also helps remove the winter undercoat and can help your dog better regulate body temperatures during hot weather. Regular clipping of long hair can also help keep your dog cool. Even longhaired cats can benefit from a summer clipping. Longhaired cats are easily overheated, even if they do stay indoors.

Watch for Insects: Insects can be bothersome to your pet during the warm, summer months. Spring and summer are when fleas and ticks are the highest. Mosquitoes are also out during this time of year. It is always a good idea to make sure your dog and cat are getting their monthly flea and tick preventative. Your dog also needs to stay current on heartworm preventative, as mosquito bites can cause heartworms. Also, keep a first aid kit on hand for bee or wasp stings.

Outdoor safety: Summer is often when people spend a lot of times outdoors. Whether it is working in the yard, visiting the lake or swimming in the pool, you need to take extra caution when your pets are with you outside. If you mow your yard or put chemicals on the grass, be sure your pets are indoors and away from the dangers. Also, if your dog enjoys the water, keep a close eye on your pet. Most pets can swim instinctively, but it is always a good idea to watch. If you enjoy taking your dog out boating, you can buy life preserver vests for your dog to wear. You can never be too safe when it comes to your beloved furry friend.

Cat 5 Cable Hangers

I don't know much about data cable, but in selling tools, fasteners and hangers to the cabling field for over 15 years I have seen many changes in the hangers becoming important with cat 5 cable and getting even more important with cat 5E, cat 6, fiber and even more on the way.

To hang cat 5 cable and others properly you need to know the limitations of each type of cable. Again, I don't know much about cable but I do know with cat 5 cable and others, radius of the bend, weight on the cable, bearing area of the hanger and support intervals are important. The best thing to do is check your cable manufacturers recommendations for your cable type.

Now as for the actual hanging of cat 5 cable and others, that I understand a little better. I have had opportunity to spend time on the job with many of our local contractors and ask them a lot of questions. I have also been able to work with them in coming up with customized hangers for their cable. Many installations require use of cable tray but many times you can mount your cable with cable hangers like j hooks or loops.

There are many types of hangers around that are designed around cat 5 cable, fiber and others. These typically have a bearing area of at least 1 ½" to support the cable. The usual problem we run into is how to hang the hangers themselves. Some of the hangers just have a single hole, which is fine if you have a cable run along a wall. But what about when you have to run your cat 5 cable under some duct work, but at least a foot over the false ceiling?

One of my favorite solutions I was asked to build was a clip to shoot into a concrete/metal deck, with 3 cable hangers supported on ¼" threaded rod 28" long with two hangers at the bottom and one about a foot above to hold cat 5 cable and fiber. Well if you have ever checked your cable hanger catalog, you won't find anything like this. We ended up assembling the clip to the rod with 2 Arlington Loops (plenum rated plastic hanger) at the bottom and then the contractor added the third hanger, an Arlington Loop with a multi clip or bat wing on the fly. Very cool, we assembled several thousand for this project.

Another very common installation is when you are running cable through a warehouse either with or against the bar joist. Several hangers are available that will hammer right on to the bar joist and can rotate 360 degrees. This makes it much easier to make gentle gradual turns and still support the more sensitive cable better.

Anytime you can use a pre assembled hanger in your install work, even though the initial cost is higher you will save money in the long run. Not only will the cable install faster, and hang better, but you will keep up the morale on the job.

How To Pick The Best Dog Collar

First off you need to watch your pet's behavior before deciding which style of dog collar to buy.

The dog collar market has a whole multitude of dog collars available, from the normal to the very specialized. Before you make a decision which type of collar to buy you need to know what each does and which dogs it suits.

The Dog Collar Types and uses

To ensure that you are using the best collar as a training aid for your dog, you should seek the advice of a professional dog trainer.

The buckle collar has a ring for you to attach the city dog license and other identification tags. Should your dog accidentally get lost, this collar and the attached tags will help him get back home.

If you don't like the sound of clinking dog tags or if you worry that the metal tags will discolor your dog's fur, then you can use a special tag pouch, available at most pet stores.

A muzzle is a basically a mesh cup that slips completely over your best friend's mouth and nose. It is attached to your pet's head with a strap behind the ears.

A head collar is not the same as a muzzle! A normal collar encourages your dog to pull against the pressure on his neck. A head collar is the opposite; it exerts steady and firm pressure on the scruff of your pet's neck.

This mimics the behavior of a mother dog who is disciplining her puppies. Slight pressure round the muzzle and on the scruff of the neck is correctional behavior that your dog can understand instinctively from the human holding the leash.

The initial training using a head collar should be done under the supervision of a qualified trainer, even though a head collar is considered to be more humane than a pinch or slip collar.

The action of the leash when correcting your best friend is very different with a head collar verses any of the other training devices. So it's important that you receive proper instruction on its use from a qualified trainer. While wearing a head collar, your a hound can still pant, bark, drink and eat, even bite.

While some trainers will use flat buckle type collars, especially on puppies, these collars do not always provide the ideal control for more unruly dogs.

Choke chains are metal chain links of various sizes with a ring on each. These collars should only be used while actively training or walking your dog. This type of collar is usually sold by length, so ask for assistance when purchasing a slip collar.

Used by many people to control hard to handle dogs, the prong or pinch collar lies flat on your dog's neck until you need to give some correction or he pulls on the leash. The pressure on the leash will cause the blunt metal prongs to pinch your dog's neck.

There is even a fancy collar that could be useful for an older pooch. Have you seen those spiked collars that make a hound look like a punk rock star? If you get your older canine one of these it won't harm him. In fact, it can serve as your best friend's protection from bigger and more aggressive dogs. Or from the overly boisterous younger dog.

Dog Collar Tips

Finally pick a pet collar that suits your dogs personality and size. A giant black leather collar with studs may not suit a toy poodle, or a pink ribbon style collar a British Bulldog. After all it is part of your dogs image so pick a canine collar that fits!

With all collars a proper fit is of vital importance. Non-slip collars should be loose enough to allow you to easily fit two fingers between the collar and the neck of the pet. Prong/pinch collars, slip/choke collars, head halters and harnesses should be fitted with the help of someone who is experienced in their use.

The incorrect fitting of one of these collars will result in improper use and can cause pain and discomfort for your pet. Please note that the sales clerk at the pet store is not usually qualified to fit these collars.
